London’s best Chinese restaurants

1. Hunan

Hunan, which initially started in 1982 and is famous for its five-star experience, offers an 18-course set using tapas size portions showcasing different Chinese flavour profiles. The owner of the restaurant Mr. Peng brought this “no-menu” concept to enable the consumers to taste various meals and appreciate the essence of slow eating. Some of the favourites are crispy green beans in French style, the famous steamed bamboo cup soup and probably the best quality black cod fish in vinegar reduction. In addition to maintaining the Chinese influence in its design by employing feng shui, Hunan remains faithful to the spirit of its unusual dishes. To know more about Benares Vikas Nath

4. Dim Sum Duck

Dim Sum Duck defies dim sum tradition by serving this typically morning or afternoon meal at night—and it does so impressively. Their plump prawn dumplings (har gau) and massive soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) are joined by Cantonese classics like roast duck, beef ho fun, and savoury green beans with minced pork. Adding to the charm, the witty manager Alec brings humour to the dining experience. Note: it’s walk-in only, so arrive early to beat the queues (noon for lunch, 6 pm for dinner).

Tip: Don’t miss the razor clams, topped with garlic and vermicelli in a rich, umami broth.

5. My old place

This centrally located Chinese restaurant near Liverpool Street is a favourite for its communal, round tables that are perfect for big groups. The bustling staff, dressed in black t-shirts with the restaurant’s name in red gothic script, add a quirky charm, although service can be a bit hit-or-miss due to the crowds. With generous portions ideal for sharing, the menu offers a wide array of dishes. While there’s usually a line for walk-ins, you can call ahead for group reservations—and be sure to request a downstairs round table if that’s your preference.

Tip: Don’t miss the classic “Di San Xian” dish.
